The time has finally come. The Combustion Chamber Red Jalapeno Hot Sauce is now available for purchase. We’re selling it at Orie’s Garlic Fest TODAY! We’ll also have our salsa for sale as well as our garlic pickles. There’s no guarantee that we won’t sell out, so please come visit us at Garlic Fest hosted by Public at the Brickyard located at 129 N Rock Island Road. It will be a great time with lots of garlicky things to try. Not to mention, the weather is supposed to be spectacular!

Important Reminders
  1. The ninth pickup for Season 2 is tomorrow, Monday, September 12th. Please note that we only have two pickups left in the season. Arrive any time between 3 pm and 7 pm and park on the West side of the property anywhere in front of the commercial kitchen (the big red building with the French doors). If we don’t come out to greet you, you can either knock on the commercial kitchen door, or give us a call at 316-227-7677. We love to give tours, so if you want one, please don’t be afraid to ask. We want you to know where your food comes from!
  2. If you don’t want a tour and are in a hurry, please call us, so we know when you’ll be here. Then we can be ready with your bag of goodies. The phone number is 316-227-7677.
  3. We provide you with a reusable grocery bag with all your goodies in it. Please bring it back next week, so we can wash it and reuse it. We’re trying to be more environmentally conscious. The plastic bags we use for the greens are still a work in progress, but that is definitely on my list of things to change.
  4. The market place is updated on Sundays, so if you want to take a look at what else we have available (besides the things already in your bag), please make your orders on Sunday or Monday morning. We can then add any additional items to your grocery bag.

News on the Farm

Our farm tour these days comes with a trenching maze. 🙂 All joking aside, it’s so good to have that part of the irrigation completed – one small miracle at a time I suppose. One of Josh’s old apprentices from the Growing Growers program actually rented a trencher for his geothermal greenhouse. He rented it for five days, and he only needed four of those days, so he offered it to us for a day. Of course, we gladly accepted! Now the trenching is done. In case you’re wondering, a geothermal greenhouse is a greenhouse that utilizes ground energy to heat the inside of it. Michael (Josh’s apprentice) took a picture of all the corrugated pipe that he is going to utilize for the heat transfer. Yikes!

We missed Valley Center’s farmer’s market last Thursday because we had previous reservations for Old Town Market. The way the Old Town Farm & Art Market works is that you sign up for specific days at the beginning of the season. Although you can change them, Josh and I felt like we were delaying the inevitable, so we decided to keep our original engagement with Old Town. Unfortunately, we just didn’t have enough stuff or enough time to support both markets which means we had to cancel the Valley Center market.

On the other side of the farm, the pigs are getting so big! I wish I had a video of them bouncing around in the pasture. Despite their girth, they are surprisingly very agile. Every time, they come running in from the fields, Josh giggles like a little kid. Since we don’t have all the proper fences in place yet, we’re struggling with over-grazing right now. Josh had to purchase hay bales to keep everyone happy. That being said, Josh struck up a deal with the electric company, so we could get the tops of the phone poles their tearing down. Those phone poles will be awesome fence corners. It always amazes me the way Josh can hit it off with everyone he meets so effortlessly.

Recipe of the Week

Rosemary Chicken with Rosemary Broccoli and Mushrooms

This has to be one of the best chicken recipes I have EVER made. I cannot believe how juicy and flavorful this whole dish was! Since Rosemary is a summer crop, use your fresh Rosemary this week to say goodbye to the summer. It’s a perfect way to celebrate the end of the season.

What's New in the Market Place

I was able to focus on pickling products this week. We now have our red pepper relish on the market place. This sweet-heat relish is great for grill night. It’s the perfect compliment to a hot dog!
